1. What is a Stringer Pallet (Dokum)?
A stringer pallet (commonly referred to in Egypt as "Dokum") is the most widely used wooden platform style worldwide. It relies on parallel timber beams (stringers) to support the top and bottom deck boards. This configuration is highly popular because it is cost-effective to manufacture and perfectly suitable for general shipping and warehousing applications.
They are also known as "Two-Way" pallets because forklift entry is restricted to the two opposite ends where the stringers do not block the opening (unless the stringers are notched, which allows partial four-way entry).
2. Stringer Pallet Components
- Top Deck Boards: Usually 5 to 7 boards that hold the cargo. Increasing board count and thickness (18-22 mm) increases weight capacity.
- Stringers (Dokum): Typically 3 thick boards (usually 70-100 mm height × 35-50 mm width) running the length of the pallet that carry the entire load.
- Bottom Deck Boards: 3 to 5 boards on the base that stabilize the pallet and distribute the weight during stacking.
- Spiral/Ring Nails: Specialized ribbed nails that resist pulling, ensuring the joints remain strong under heavy movements.
