1. What is a Solid Deck Pallet (Sadd)?

In the wooden pallet manufacturing trade in Egypt, a "Solid Deck Pallet" (referred to as "Sadd") is a platform designed with a completely closed top surface, leaving no gaps or spaces between the deck boards. The top boards are placed flush against one another to create a continuous, flat 100% solid surface area.

A solid deck pallet can be built structurally using either a stringer (dokum) or block base, but its defining commercial characteristic is the fully closed top deck that protects sensitive goods from falling or sagging.

2. Solid Deck vs. Open/Gapped Deck Pallets

Wooden platforms are divided into two main categories based on the top deck structure:

  • Solid Deck (Sadd): Zero gaps between boards. It offers maximum surface coverage, protects cargo from bottom dirt/moisture, and prevents small boxes or bag materials from slipping or tearing.
  • Open/Gapped Deck (Sheesh): Features gaps between the deck boards (usually 2 to 8 cm wide). This is the standard design because it uses less wood, making it lighter and more economical, while allowing drainage and airflow.

3. Technical Components & Anatomy

A solid deck pallet consists of:

  • Top Solid Deck Boards: 8 to 12 timber boards (depending on pallet width) nailed tight side-by-side. Standard thicknesses range from 18 to 22 mm.
  • Base Support Structure: Can be configured as a 3-stringer base (two-way entry) or a 9-block base (four-way entry) according to the operational requirements.
  • Bottom Deck Boards: Support boards on the base that stabilize the unit for racking and stacking.

4. Industrial Applications in Egypt

Solid deck pallets are heavily requested in specific Egyptian industrial sectors:

  • Chemicals & Powder Bags: Prevents industrial sacks and granules from tearing or falling through deck spacing.
  • Food & Pharmaceutical Factories: Provides a clean barrier that prevents ground moisture, splinters, or dirt from making contact with primary packaging.
  • Lightweight Cartons & Paper Goods: Distributes weight evenly across a flat surface, preventing box compression and crushing that typically occurs over open gaps.

5. Pros and Cons of Solid Deck Pallets

Advantages Disadvantages / Challenges
✅ Smooth, flat surface ideal for sensitive or bagged cargos. ❌ Consumes 20% to 30% more timber, resulting in higher production costs.
✅ Superior load distribution for custom or odd-shaped items. ❌ Total empty weight is heavier, which can affect shipping calculations.
✅ High barrier protection from ground moisture and forklift fork tips. ❌ No water drainage or bottom airflow compared to open styles.
