1. What are Wooden Runners (Marain)?
Wooden runners (known in the Egyptian industry as "Marain") are the thick structural timber boards running along the length of a pallet. They act as the primary load-bearing beams to which deck boards are nailed. The density, thickness, and layout of these runners dictate how much weight a pallet can safely carry without bowing or fracturing.
In standard shipping platforms, a configuration of 3 parallel runners is standard (one on each edge, and one centered). For wider platforms or extra heavy industrial loads, 4 or more runners are utilized.
2. Types & Designs of Pallet Runners
- Solid Runners: Continuous solid wood beams. They are strong and easy to manufacture, but limit forklift entry to 2-way access.
- Notched Runners: Solid runners featuring pre-cut rectangular openings (notches) on the bottom edge. These notches allow forklift forks to slide through, turning a two-way layout into a partial four-way access configuration.
- Double/Multi-Runners: Doubling up two runners side-by-side to support extreme payloads exceeding 2,000 kg.
- LVL (Laminated Veneer Lumber) Runners: Engineered composite wood made of pressed wood layers. Extremely strong, highly consistent, but more expensive.
3. Technical Dimensions & Specifications
Standard runner sizes cut at El Negma sawmills:
| Runner Length | Height (Thickness) | Width | Target Pallet Style |
|---|---|---|---|
| 80 cm | 70-90 mm | 35-50 mm | Euro Pallet 120×80 cm |
| 100 cm | 70-100 mm | 35-50 mm | Citrus/Industrial 120×100 cm |
| 110 cm | 80-100 mm | 40-50 mm | Chemical CP Square Pallets |
| 120 cm | 70-90 mm | 35-45 mm | Standard GMA/US Pallets |
4. Best Timber Species for Runners
- Swedish Pine / Spruce (Softwood): The most cost-effective and common choice. Offers an excellent strength-to-weight ratio and reacts perfectly to ISPM-15 heat treatment.
- Beechwood (Hardwood): 30-40% stronger than pine. Excellent for multi-use industrial pallets handling heavy machinery parts. Higher price point.
- Musk Pine (Moski): Highly popular locally in Egypt. Slightly softer than Swedish pine, best suited for local standard pallets or single-use export shipments.
5. Runner Quality & Pallet Safety
Because runners carry the main bending moment, a single failure can lead to catastrophic cargo drops. El Negma ensures quality by checking:
- Moisture Content (MC): Keeping moisture below 20% to prevent wood warping and shrinkage.
- Straight Grain Fiber: Ensuring wood grains run parallel to the runner length. Slanted grains drastically reduce load limits.
- Knot Inspections: Excluding large structural knots in the center of the runners where tension stresses are highest.
