What is Methyl Bromide (MB) Fumigation?

Methyl Bromide (MB) fumigation is a highly powerful and effective chemical method for treating and fumigating wood and pallets. Methyl bromide is a colorless, odorless gas with superior ability to penetrate wood cells and rapidly eradicate all incubating insects, nematode worms, and fungi, making it officially approved under the international ISPM 15 agricultural quarantine standard.

How Chemical Fumigation of Pallets is Executed

The chemical fumigation process is carried out following precise steps to ensure complete eradication of pests:

  • Isolation and Sealing: Wooden pallets are stacked, covered with extra-thick plastic tarps, and completely sealed off from the outside air to prevent gas leakage.
  • Gas Injection and Concentration: Methyl bromide gas is injected in pre-determined doses (depending on ambient temperature and wood type) into the enclosed space.
  • Continuous Exposure (Fumigation): The pallets remain exposed to the gas at a high, constant concentration for at least 24 continuous hours.
  • Aeration and Safe Disposal: After the duration ends, the tarps are carefully lifted and the pallets are aerated to completely eliminate gas residues, ensuring the safety of workers and importers.

When is Methyl Bromide Fumigation Preferred?

Despite the growing global trend towards thermal alternatives, methyl bromide fumigation remains an essential and required option in certain cases:

  • Requirements of Some Importing Countries: Customs in some international destinations require certain shipments to be specifically fumigated with methyl bromide to ensure the highest levels of biosecurity and combat endemic pests.
  • Used Pallets and Very Thick Wood: The gas has a penetration power for large wood blocks that sometimes surpasses surface heat.
  • Lack of Heat Treatment Kilns: Gas fumigation is an excellent logistical solution in ports and areas that lack certified HT kilns.

Environmental and Health Safety Standards for Gas Fumigation

Since methyl bromide is an ozone-depleting gas listed under the Montreal Protocol, its use is strictly regulated:

  • Pallet Stamping: Gas-treated pallets are marked with the MB symbol as part of the international phytosanitary stamp.
  • Authorization and Official Certification: The fumigation process can only be performed by licensed companies and under the direct supervision of agricultural quarantine engineers to issue the official fumigation certificate approved for export.

It is recommended to obtain official certified fumigation certificates and apply Methyl Bromide (MB) fumigation according to the international specifications required by importing destinations, to secure the transit of shipments without any customs delays.
