1. What is the ISPM-15 Standard?
ISPM-15 (International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures No. 15) is an international quarantine standard designed by the IPPC to prevent the spread of forest pests and plant diseases across borders through wooden packaging materials. It applies to raw wood packaging exceeding 6 mm in thickness (such as pallets, crates, and dunnage).
2. IPPC Stamp Markings Breakdown
Compliant wooden pallets must be permanently stamped on two opposite sides with the IPPC logo (the "wheat stamp"). The stamp contains:
- XX (Country Code): E.g., EG for Egypt, DE for Germany.
- 000 (Facility Code): Unique registration number of the certified wood treatment facility.
- YY (Treatment Method): E.g., HT for Heat Treatment, MB for Methyl Bromide.
3. Materials Exempt from ISPM-15
Alternative materials that undergo high heat, pressure, and chemical bonding during manufacturing are exempt from ISPM-15:
- Plastic pallets (completely exempt and biological pest-free).
- Processed engineered wood (Plywood, OSB, and compressed wood block pallets).
- Cardboard, paperboard, and steel packaging.
